A chronic infection of the gum tissue that can result in the breakdown of the tissue as well as the deterioration of bone that surrounds and supports your teeth, gum disease should never be taken lightly. In fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Studies show that somewhere between 75% and 95% of all adults are suffering some stageof periodontal disease. Dr. Priyank Mathur from Smilekraft Dentistry discusses the stages of this disorder
Gingivitis
The mildest form of periodontal disease, the gums become red and swollen and bleed easily. There is little to no discomfort and usually caused by lack of professional cleaning.
Mild Periodontis
This is the second stage of gum disease, an inflammation of the gums caused by plaque buildup at the gum-line. If daily brushing and flossing do not remove the plaque, it produces toxins (poisons) that can irritate the gum tissue, causing gingivitis.
Moderate Periodontis
As the disease progresses, more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Symptoms are still generally mild, but may begin to include receding gums and food impaction between teeth.
Severe Periodontis
This stage is characterised by gum recession and loose teeth leading to the loss of teeth. Treatment usually requires advanced procedures to control its progression and restore lost tissues.
